Pellicles are transparent polymer films (typically 3 to 5 microns thick) supported on
metal frames. We have developed a process that allows us to deposit high quality
dielectric layers on them, enabling the production of pellicles that function as low
pass filters, high pass filters and polarizers.
The advantages of using pellicles instead of components based on glass substrates
or prisms are as follows:
- Very small wavefront distortion in transmission, typically on the order of 1/50th wave
peak-to-valley in the visible region
- No change in focal plane position or image shift when pellicle is inserted in optical
system
- No introduction of chromatic or spherical aberration
- Ability to withstand high optical intensities

Three documents concerning applications and properties of pellicles are available
on request:
1. Parylene Pellicles for Space Applications - This gives extensive information on
Parylene pellicles in particular, and has a section comparing Parylene pellicles
with pellicles made from other materials.
2. Solving Design Problems with Pellicles - This is an article describing the
use of pellicles in various optical systems.
3. Pellicle Laser Damage Test Report - A document from Martin-Marietta
describing results of subjecting Parylene pellicles to high-energy 1064 nm laser
pulses.
